How can you make a positive choice that allows you to take part in saving the ocean?

If you only buy sports clothes once a year, think of us the next time you do.

The billions upon billions of items of plastic waste clogs our oceans, lakes, and rivers. Even worse, it piles up on land and harms the environment and wildlife.

About 8-million metric tons of plastic are thrown into the ocean annually. Of those, 236,000 tons are microplastics– tiny pieces of broken-down plastic smaller than your little fingernail. And every minute, one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into our oceans.

Although the outlook is a little overwhelming, there is hope, and for now, there is still time.

This is where The Ocean Project comes in.

@VanillaShanti is a new activewear brand that is made out of recycled plastic found in the ocean.

We can´t promise to save the world, but we are doing our best to do our part in making our environment a healthier and better place for now and for the future. At Vanilla Shanti, we believe that it is our responsibility to make sure that we are leaving a positive impact that goes beyond our lifetime.

What is rPET?

What is rPET?

PET is considered to be a highly recyclable plastic. Used PET containers can be washed and re-melted into plasma, from which new items can be crafted. However, it can be really hard to collect clean, high-quality plastics! This means that very few PET containers can re-enter the cycle as food-grade containers, where this material is mostly used. Less than half of plastic bottles purchased each year make it to recycling facilities. Only around 7% of recycled containers are turned back into usable bottles. The rest go on to fill up our oceans and landfills.

That´s where brands like Vanilla Shanti come in!

Manufacturers may not always be able to turn all salvaged plastic into new containers, but these other plastics may find a new calling as recycled polyester fabric, or rPET. This recycled polyester fabric can be used to make products, such as Vanilla Shanti’s fashionable yoga wear.

Your voice matters and we are listening!

When companies choose to use rPET in their products, they provide a market for recycled plastics. By upcycling waste that would otherwise be in oceans, we are making a statement that Earth and sustainability matter, and we are helping to save the environment one purchase at a time.

Like any business, recycling facilities have to make money– if they’re not turning a profit from the materials they collect, they’ll stop collecting them. When consumers purchase products made with recycled content, they’re sending a message to companies that they value their sustainability efforts! By creating awareness and demand for recycled products, we help solidify recycling programs and recycled goods as valuable pieces in the production process.

We’re starting with Vanilla Shanti– you decide what we do next. Contact us through social media or via email and tell us what you would like to have made in a sustainable way.
